D: D-D-D is an artistic activism project that explores the sensing of fine dust through a set of experimental practices called ‘DOCUMENT-DIY-DEMONSTRATE’. By building its own sensing tools and staging guerrilla sensing performances at monitoring stations, D: D-D-D offers an alternative approach to the fine dust problem in South Korea and seeks to redefine the social role of artists in an era of dust pollution.
The project takes a critical look at the particular phenomena of fine dust and questions the conventional reliance on the quantitative, visual data produced by 614 urban air monitoring stations, which transmit thousands of data points every hour. Drawing on the elemental ambiguities of fine dust identified by environmental scientist Emma Garnett, it calls for a closer look at how social, ethical, and political issues are entangled, and stresses the need for concrete action by governments and citizens.
We are no longer measuring; we are sensing.
