Investigating: Weathering Ports is a 15-minute lecture performance and the final presentation of the Goethe-Investigating residency. It draws on research into Maasvlakte, an artificial industrial zone built on reclaimed land in the Port of Rotterdam, where the weather arrives already mixed with emissions from the port.
Taking as its method the concept of weathering proposed by Astrida Neimanis and Jennifer Mae Hamilton (2018), the performance treats polluted weather as something lived through rather than observed from a distance. Findings from fieldwork unfold through the artist's own body, a bio-archive in which shifting weather and pollution are sensed, absorbed and recorded.
Moving between lecture and performance, the work asks what it would mean for artists to become weather-bodies, sensing, performing and acting within the very atmosphere they study. In doing so, it unsettles the lines drawn between nature and culture, body and environment.
